Certified Coaches, Five-Hour Drive: Hyrox Training in the Triad

There is a small oddity in the Triad fitness scene worth pointing out: Greensboro has more Hyrox coaching credentials per capita than a lot of larger cities, and the nearest place to actually race is roughly five and a half hours down the interstate. Gyms here built the programming before there was any local event to point at, which says something about how the format spreads — not through races, but through people who tried one and came back evangelizing.

A Hyrox race is the same everywhere in the world: eight one-kilometer runs, each one followed by a functional fitness station. You ski erg for 1,000 meters, push a weighted sled 50 meters, pull it back, cover 80 meters of burpee broad jumps, row another 1,000 meters, carry farmers handles 200 meters, lunge 100 meters with a sandbag on your shoulders, and finish with 100 wall balls. The standards never change, which is the whole appeal — your time in one city is directly comparable to your time in another, and to everyone else who has ever run the format.

Three Greensboro gyms run the format with explicit designations, a fourth brings it in through a national franchise program, and a Winston-Salem studio is backed by Hyrox’s official global gym partnership. That is a genuinely competitive set of options for a market this size. Here is who is coaching it.

CrossFit Versatile: Two Certified Hyrox Coaches and a Split Curriculum

On Park Terrace near Lindley Park, Versatile describes itself as an official Hyrox training club and runs a structured program — split deliberately into two distinct weekly tracks rather than one catch-all class. Thursday sessions at 9:30 in the morning and 5:30 and 6:30 in the evening cover skill and development: movement technique, positioning, pacing, and efficiency. Sunday mornings at 9:00 and 10:30 handle endurance and race prep with longer race-specific work. Optional running add-ons run Tuesday intervals and Friday Zone 2. On credentials, owner Ben Gleason holds both CrossFit Level 2 and Hyrox Level 2 certifications and has run the gym for fourteen years, and coach Megan Vannoy holds CrossFit Level 1 and Hyrox Level 2 with more than a decade in the industry, according to the gym’s team page. Established 2012, 9,000 square feet, $150 a month unlimited or $20 to drop in.

College Hill CrossFit: The Campus-Adjacent Option

On Oakland Avenue in the College Hill neighborhood near UNCG, this gym describes itself as an official Hyrox training center, with classes listed Tuesday morning and evening, a full Thursday block running from 5 in the morning to 7:30 at night, Saturday midday, and two Sunday morning slots. The most practically useful feature for a race build is the open gym window: Monday through Friday from 5 in the morning until 6 in the evening. If your training plan calls for running your own race simulations or catching up on running volume outside class hours, that access is worth more than an extra scheduled session. Programming explicitly covers the race stations — running, rowing, sled pushes, wall balls. Membership runs $160 a month unlimited or $160 for a ten-pack punch card, with a free trial class and drop-ins available. They also operate socially under the name College Hill Collective.

CrossFit Greensboro: Hyrox and In-House Physical Therapy

On Norwalk Street off the High Point Road corridor, CrossFit Greensboro carries affiliate number 1950, and the gym says it has coached CrossFit for more than seventeen years. Hyrox is a standing program here, listed alongside CrossFit, weightlifting and team training, covering running, rowing, sled pushes and functional movements with scaling for all levels. It arrived as a permanent addition in early 2025; call ahead for Hyrox class times. The gym also has in-house physical therapy alongside nutrition coaching, which is a meaningful thing to have in the building once you start stacking running volume on top of loaded carries. Owner and coach John Meeks runs the gym.

ISI Elite Training: Turf Sessions, Childcare, and a Franchise-Level Affiliation

The non-CrossFit option, on Highwoods Boulevard in northwest Greensboro off Wendover. There is no dedicated Hyrox class on the schedule. ISI runs one format, a 50-minute coach-led session on turf it calls Athletic Based Training, run on a weekly body-part split — lower body Monday, upper Tuesday, full body Wednesday, and so on. The Hyrox connection is at franchise level rather than on the schedule: ISI describes a network of more than thirty-six Hyrox affiliate locations nationally and argues, in a July 2026 post of its own, that blending strength and conditioning under fatigue is what a hybrid race actually demands. Whether that transfers is a judgement you make in a trial session, not something a class title settles. Two extras here: InBody body-composition scanning on site, and IronKidz childcare. Membership is month-to-month with no annual contract and works at any ISI location nationwide, and the first session is free. The $99 offer is a 45-day challenge price, so ask what a month costs.

F45 Training Winston-Salem: Backed by the Global Partnership

On North Patterson Avenue in downtown Winston-Salem near the Innovation Quarter, this studio lists Hyrox as a named workout type in its rotation alongside cardio, resistance, hybrid, recovery, Peak500 and LionHeart formats. F45 is Hyrox’s official global gym partner, a deal first announced in May 2024 and extended in March 2026 with title partnership of the Hyrox Washington D.C. Americas Regional Championships. Head trainer and studio manager Amanda Currier leads a roster of eight named trainers. Classes run 45 minutes drawing on F45’s library of more than 80 workouts. One detail worth knowing: memberships are HSA and FSA eligible, which for some readers changes the math on a year of training entirely.

What the Triad Does Not Have Yet

Two honest gaps. First, there is still no Hyrox race in North Carolina, and there is no realistic drive-and-race weekend inside the state line. Read the calendar off Hyrox’s own race finder rather than a training plan or a gym’s noticeboard, because the Southeast dates have moved. The nearest remaining 2026 race is Nashville, December 9 to 13, roughly seven hours. Tampa runs October 22 to 25, which is a long haul at about nine hours. Looking into 2027, Atlanta is now confirmed and scheduled — April 23 to 25, about five and a half hours, and the closest race to Greensboro on the whole calendar — with Miami Beach on March 26 to 28. If you have seen Washington, D.C. recommended as the local target, that is out of date: the D.C. Americas Regional Championships ran in March 2026 and no D.C. event appears on the current calendar at all.

Second, there is no Triad-wide Hyrox club, meetup, or training collective. Local activity is organized gym by gym rather than as an independent community, and there have been no Hyrox simulation events hosted in the region. The closest thing to a hub is Versatile’s Thursday and Sunday structure with its optional midweek running sessions. One language note before you shop: gyms describe their Hyrox relationships as training clubs, training centers, affiliates, or partners, and these are not interchangeable. Ask directly if it matters to you, and confirm class times by phone.
