Smooth Talk: Waxing and Sugaring in Greensboro

Body hair removal in the Triad splits along a simple line. Waxing uses a resin-based product warmed above body temperature, pressed onto the skin and pulled against the direction of hair growth. Sugaring uses a paste of sugar, lemon and water applied at roughly body temperature and flicked off in the same direction the hair grows, which is why practitioners describe it as less likely to snap a hair mid-shaft. Both need about a quarter inch of growth, roughly two to three weeks past a shave, and both leave skin that should stay out of pools, saunas and direct sun for a day or so afterward. The practical question in Greensboro is not which method is better in the abstract but which nearby studio actually performs the one you want, since several advertise both and a few do only one. Below are seven studios across Greensboro and Winston-Salem, what each one specializes in, and their hours and pricing where listed.

Silver Bloom Beauty — sugaring only, in the Morehead Building

Felicia, the licensed esthetician behind Silver Bloom Beauty, works out of Suite 111 at 2302 West Meadowview Road in Greensboro, inside the Morehead Building south of Gate City Boulevard. The studio is built around sugaring rather than offering it as one option among several, covering intimate work like Brazilian and bikini, full arms and legs, and facial hair removal including brow lamination. Facials, lash extensions and natural nail care fill out the menu, which makes it possible to stack a sugaring appointment with skincare in one visit. Hours run Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with booking handled through GlossGenius; call 336-935-2153 for current rates.

Peach Perfect Wax Lounge — a two-chair studio inside Sola

Peach Perfect Wax Lounge occupies a suite inside Sola Salon Studios at 704-A Pembroke Road, Suite 131, a short drive from Friendly Center. Joy, the owner, is a licensed esthetician with eight years behind the table, and brow artist Raquel brings seventeen years to shaping, threading, tinting and lamination, so the studio functions as two specialties under one roof rather than a single generalist. Brazilian, bikini and underarm waxing are the core services, and the lounge describes itself as a woman-owned, judgment-free room. Raquel works Sunday and Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Joy works Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The studio stays well booked and can’t take walk-ins, so book online in advance. Reach it at (336) 378-3433.

Waxing the City — open seven days off Wendover

Waxing the City sits at 1603 Highwoods Boulevard in the retail cluster off Wendover Avenue, and its schedule is the reason to know about it: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The studio uses a custom-formulated wax that it says exfoliates while it removes hair, and its estheticians handle brows, lip, nose, ears, legs, arms, back, chest and Brazilian services for both men and women. New clients get 20 percent off a first wax. For prices, call the studio at (336) 553-6401.

European Wax Center — Wax Pass packages near Friendly Center

The Greensboro location at 3354 West Friendly Avenue, near Friendly Center, lists its prices: a full Brazilian runs $57 to $89 depending on the service selected, a full leg is $79, an eyebrow wax is $24 and an upper lip is $14. The chain’s pricing model leans on its Wax Pass package, which bundles nine waxes with three more at no charge for a stated 25 percent saving. Hours are long, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and there is a second North Carolina location in High Point if Friendly Avenue is inconvenient. Call (336) 316-1900.

Hello Sugar — both methods, on the corner of Fourth and Broad

Hello Sugar’s West End studio in Winston-Salem, at 360 North Broad Street on the southwest corner of Fourth and Broad, offers sugar and wax as parallel options rather than treating one as a substitute for the other. The location states that its estheticians complete an advanced certification focused specifically on pain-reduction technique. Alongside Brazilian, brow, underarm and lip-and-chin services, it runs enzyme and brightening treatments plus lash and brow work. A membership saves up to 20 percent and can be frozen or canceled at no charge. There are five complimentary 30-minute spaces out front and a lot to the south for longer visits; the phone is (743) 219-1113.

Wax & Sugar — evenings and weekends only, off North Point

Ynez runs Wax & Sugar out of Suite A-1 at 8011 North Point Boulevard in Winston-Salem, and the studio does exactly what its name says: full-body and Brazilian waxing alongside sugaring for body, face, sensitive areas and brows. The schedule is the thing to plan around, because it is built for people who work standard hours. The studio opens Wednesday and Friday evenings from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is closed Monday, Tuesday and Thursday entirely. Price and booking questions go to 336-462-8130 or ynez@waxandsugarco.com, and a same-week appointment is realistic only if you catch one of those four open days.

Fab Beauty Studio — sugaring inside a lash and brow practice

Fab Beauty Studio at 1985 North Peace Haven Road, Suite 5 in Winston-Salem approaches hair removal from the other direction. Faby’s practice is built primarily around lash extensions, keratin lash lifts, brow artistry, facials and makeup, with face and body hair removal folded in; the studio notes that sugaring is among its most requested services. That combination suits someone who already books lashes or brows there and would rather not add a second studio to the calendar. Appointments are by request only rather than posted hours, and scheduling runs through Mangomint. Contact the studio at (336) 490-5256 or hello@fabbeautyws.com to ask what a specific service costs. The studio is on Instagram as @fabbeautyws.

Before You Book

Two questions settle most of the confusion. First, ask which method the appointment actually uses, because several of these studios offer both. Second, ask about hair length, since arriving with a two-day shadow means a wasted trip at any of them. If you use a retinoid, an acid exfoliant or an oral acne medication, say so when you book rather than at the table, as most studios will decline the service or adjust the plan. On price, ask when you call; that call is also the moment to ask whether the quoted rate covers a full Brazilian or a bikini line, which are different services at different prices. Finally, look hard at the hours above before choosing. Two of the seven are open four days a week or fewer, and in the run-up to summer those windows fill first.
